What sets ZRT Laboratory apart from other hormone testing labs?

ZRT Laboratory is the only hormone testing lab in the country that is owned and operated by the man who developed saliva hormone testing for the masses, Dr. David Zava. No other lab has at its helm, a Ph.D. biochemist, cancer researcher, author and internationally recognized expert in hormone health who is actively engaged in training and educating health care professionals. ZRT Laboratory is also unique from other hormone testing facilities in that we are the only large-volume clinical lab to use specially-developed extraction methods to remove contaminants from saliva that can alter test results; AND we are the only hormone testing lab to monitor symptoms and relate these back to the hormone levels tested. At the same time we document hormone type, dosage and timing in those using hormone replacement therapies. In this way, (unlike other labs), ZRT’s hormone test report does not just stop at numbers, but takes into account every important aspect of the individual’s hormone picture. Every detail gathered is integrated into an interpretive hormone test evaluation that is by far more comprehensive than the average saliva hormone test result.

Who is Dr. David Zava?

I would like to introduce Dr. David Zava Ph.D. President and founder of ZRT Laboratory; a biochemist, cancer research scientist, author and leading expert in the field of hormone health. Dr. Zava developed saliva testing for the commercial market as a simple non-invasive means to identify hormone imbalances associated with diminished health and well-being. Over the past 25 years he has published 60 research papers on the effects of estrogens and progesterone on breast cancer, and is an internationally known speaker on the subject of hormonal imbalances and the hormonal link to breast cancer. Dr. Zava established ZRT Laboratory in Beaverton, Oregon in 1998. He is co-author with Dr. John Lee of the best-selling book on breast cancer prevention: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer: How Hormone Balance Can Help Save Your Life.

Why don’t you collect saliva eleven times over a fourteen-day period like some labs?

It is much more difficult and unreliable to collect saliva this frequently, and in 95% of cases one will get the same average approximate measurement by testing once in the morning when hormones are at optimal levels, instead of collecting at eleven time points throughout the month. Women who are still having menstrual cycles test during the luteal phase (the second half of the cycle), days 19-21 when hormones are surging. From experience we see that the resulting tested hormone levels closely parallel clinical symptoms so that we can identify what is happening in the body in terms of hormone balance or imbalance.

How do you set your expected ranges? What are they based on?

Our hormone target ranges are based on a highly significant number of individuals representing each of the defined populations as well as controlled population studies of women using a specified dosage of hormone supplementation. Variations in ranges refer to the wide individuality of hormone levels and are based upon the sex, age, and menstrual status (cycling or not cycling). We also take a complete hormonal history: specific hormone supplementation, dosage and timing to assign expected ranges. In people taking hormones, our ranges are based on 12-24 hours post-hormone use.

How does your testing work?

Thank you for your query. ZRT Laboratory is a saliva hormone testing facility and we test the following eight hormones: estradiol, estrone, estriol, (the estrogens) progesterone, testosterone, DHEA-s, androstenedione, and cortisol. Our kits are home test kits for a one-time collection. We then send the kit to the customer and after collection they return their saliva sample and paperwork to us (we provide a pre-addressed, pre-paid box). Once we receive the kit, we process the sample in our laboratory and send the results back to the customer or provider who originally prescribed the test along with a detailed hormone test evaluation. Results typically take 5-7 business days from the time we receive the sample.
